Barry Richardson

 

Barry Richardson was born in Warren County, North Carolina on August 13, 1954 to Jessie R. and Clarine R. Richardson. He attended the public schools of Warren County and received a high school diploma from John Graham High School in 1972.  In 1973 he enrolled in Pembroke State University and received a BA in Political Science in 1976.

 

Barry began his career in Native American Affairs in 1976 when he was hired by the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs to work in the Section 8 Housing Program.  In 1980 Barry moved to Baltimore to work for the Baltimore American Indian Center and became its executive director in 1982, where he served until 1993.  In 1993 Barry returned to North Carolina to work for the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe as its Tribal Administrator.  In 1993 Barry founded Native Opportunity Way Community Development Corporation, Inc.  in Hollister where he currently serves as CEO. He is the founder of the National American Indian Council and currently serves as president of the organization.

 

Barry is a field reader for the Administration for Native Americans, Office of Indian Education and the Social Security Administration   He is a certified housing counselor.

 

Business interests include being the owner/operator of Pow-Wow for over 15 years (Pow-Wow sponsors cultural educational/entertainment events regarding Native American culture), founder and current president of  Tuscarora, Occaneechee, Tutelo Properties, a Land Development Company, and owner/president of BR&Associates, a consultant firm specializing in writing proposals, strategic plans and financial management.

 

Organizations and boards that he serves on include the Warren County Board of Commissioners (he was elected in 2004) and Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity Agency.

 

Past boards includes the Warren County Department of Social Services (served as board chairman from 1999 to 2003), Halifax County Tourism Board (served as Vice-Chairman), Vance-Warren Health Plan, Twin County Rural Health Center, Halifax Smart Start, Halifax-Edgecombe-Wilson Empowerment Alliance (served as board chairman) and the North Carolina Arts Council Funding Panel

                

Honors include: Who’s Who among American Colleges and Universities-1975-76, City of Baltimore Citation-1983, Boss of the Year-1983 & 1985, Brantley Blue Award-1986, Distinguished Service Award-1992, Haliwa-Saponi Business Person of the Year-1996

 

He is the proud father of Marvin “Marty”, Stacey and Adam, as well as, a doting grandfather to Jada.
